Mental Health & Addiction Services

Accessible mental health and addiction services contribute to a healthier communities by promoting early intervention, reducing stigma, and offering comprehensive care to individuals struggling with mental health issues or substance abuse.

Mental Health

Our aim is to improve the quality of, and access to, culturally appropriate, wholistic and community directed mental health and injury prevention services at the community level to help create healthy family and community environments. We have an in-house psychologist every Thursday and we partner with Mawlugutineg Mental Wellness services to provide culturally safe mental health counselling.

Community Addictions Services 

This program is aimed at reducing levels of alcohol, drug and solvent abuse in community. Provides prevention activities, individual counselling, referrals to treatment centre programs and develops relationships with other agencies. The program consists of the NNADAP worker and Community Outreach & Prevention worker and they work together with the Harm reduction Coordinator to offer various services to the community.

Prevention activities include: 

  • Public awareness campaigns

  • Developing content for schools on alcohol and drug abuse

  • Participation in school programs and cultural events

  • Assist the community with workshops and events that support the wellbeing of the individual and the community

Intervention activities may include:  

  • Discussion groups

  • Appropriate spiritual and cultural programs

Aftercare activities may include:

  • Crisis intervention

  • Counselling services

  • Sharing circles and support groups 

  • Support visits and referrals to other services, including detox and medical treatments, social services, and band services

Harm Reduction Program

The Outreach Harm Reduction Team/program utilizes the principles and practices of harm reduction in an effort to empower service users to have access to safer drug use practices and access to other support services as defined by the needs of each individual.

  • Provide harm reduction materials/supplies to IDU population through consistent delivery/pickup services

  • Handle and transport large quantities of used syringes and properly dispose of biohazardous materials within the agency’s policies and procedures

  • Provide educational materials on harm reduction, HIV, HCV, and other blood-borne illnesses

  • Provide support for at-risk populations with regards to health promotion, community resources, etc.

  • Train staff/volunteers on needle exchange protocol to Naloxone Training and kits

  • Maintain positive relationships with community partner agencies regarding the needle exchange program
